Joan Beaufort

King James' imprisonment must not have been too confining since he met Joan Beaufort while in prison. He married her in 1423 a few year's after his release and they had eight children.

Maybe it was more like house arrest. Or maybe some sort of halfway house where they could receive visitors or fraternize with each other.

It appears he was imprisoned for ransom by Henry IV of England. James' father, Robert III, died after hearing of his capture and his uncle was in no hurry to pay the ransom since he was acting regent. James was imprisoned and educated at Windsor Castle and the ransom was finally paid some 18 years later after his uncle died.
